Does Your Food Blog Have An Identity Crisis?

Identity and Branding

I've been thinking hard about this question and I think it's an important question for all bloggers to answer---whether beginning or established. With so many blogs in the blogosphere, it's important to distinguish yourself with a clear and unique identity.

Tips to clarify your blog identity in second part of post...

The questions below are a series of questions that helped me to initially clarify my blog identity for Over The Hill And On A Roll, and that I continue to ask myself on a regular basis.

Answering the questions can be a really helpful exercise that will help you find your blog identity and brand. Give them a try!

How Is Your Blog Unique?

With so many food blogs out there, you have to find a way to distinguish yourself from all of the rest. How will you do that? Through design? Type of recipes? Voice in writing?

Simply Recipes is one of my favorite blogs because I enjoy reading about Elise and her family's tie to the food she makes. In her writing, Elise gives us a glimpse into the history of each recipe, and those little tid-bits make her writing unique.

What's Your Blog's Format?

Is your blog mainly recipes? Food news? Cooking Tips? Are there stories that introduce the recipes?

When answering this question keep in mind the first question---how is this adding to the uniqueness of your blog?

What Is Your Blog Contributing?

This is a hard question to answer, and it relates to the first two, but the important thing is to ask yourself why will readers find your blog interesting? And more importantly, why will they return?

One of my favorite food blogs is The Bitten Word. I constantly return to The Bitten Word because they do what I wish I could---take stock of their cooking magazines and try recipes out---or as they say---resolving to put their food magazines to good use. They're contributing a service of sorts---which makes me visit and return. What type of service will your blog provide?

How Are You Reinforcing Your Brand?

Once you answer these questions an identity should start to emerge. The next phase is to asses how you will reinforce this identity. EVERY post is an opportunity to reinforce this brand, so don't squander it! Evey image, every paragraph, and every recipe should reinforce your brand and identity!

It sounds like a lot of work, but it will make a world of difference!
